Out and About: ABC Acres in Hamilton
HAMILTON — There’s a place right here in Montana where bananas, lemons, tangerines and avocados grow — and that’s just the beginning.
Summer in Montana is one of the best times to be here and if you’re looking for a vacation, why not stay put?
Whether you want to take a day trip or an extended stay, ABC Acres in Hamilton offers a truly unique experience. Located at the base of the Bitterroot Mountains, just south of Hamilton, is ABC Acres, an agritourism farm and ranch.
It is a place where tourists and locals alike can escape and experience a closer connection with the world around them.
“We have over 10,000 tree plantings, we have deer and elk coming here, migrating geese and osprey. We have set up Montana Educational Kiosks,” said owner Tim Southwell. “And we invite people to the farm to simply experience a rich connection with nature.”
Now, whether you plan to spend a day exploring the beautiful grounds or staying several days at one of their guesthouses, ABC Acres offers something for everyone.
“We are open Monday through Friday, as well as Saturday. People can come, park their car, take a map of the farm and walk and explore. They can prepare their lunch and get lost; they can pack their rod and fish. Or by reservation you can book something extra whether it is a one hour tour or a three hour full farm tour. Or something more interactive, collecting eggs, feeding chickens milking goats, you know all that. And then, from a group perspective, doing more educational things, learning about our microclimates, our tree systems, or learning about our animals, both wildlife and livestock. – Tim Southwell, owner of ABC Acres
A very unique item they just brought this year would be this greenhouse. Now I know what you’re thinking, what’s so special about a greenhouse? Well, what if I told you that all the plants in this greenhouse grow best near the equator?
“Here is a tropical zone 10 greenhouse. The lowest temperature it usually gets is around 40, 45 degrees. Thus, we are able to grow complete tropical plants. This is the third rack of bananas this year,” explained horticulturist Dalton Brown as he showed us around. “This is our new mango tree with star fruits. Avocado here and three more in this tree here. Here’s a passion vine and a Hawaiian tea plant. There’s also ginger and turmeric in all the beds.
So load up the family and spend a day – or more – learning, playing, and experiencing the best Montana has to offer, a closer connection to nature. ABC Acres is located at 364 South McCarthy Loop in Hamilton. Learn more at https://abcacres.com/.
