Atlantic City is next… Cantone reopens the Mohegan Sun Arena
With Tom Cantone, it’s about getting back to normal. By focusing on not a “new normal”.
Air Supply was the first high-attendance live concert (Sunday, July 18, 2021) since the COVID-19 pandemic.
An enthusiastic and voluntarily small crowd attended. Capacity was limited due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Cantone, the president of corporate-level sports and entertainment for Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment (MGE) expects the Mohegan Sun Arena to return to full capacity (10,000) on Thursday, July 29, 2021 when “Lady A” appears.
“We wrote an important new chapter tonight and a lot of new memories tonight. It was great to see a big crowd here creating memories again,” Cantone said in an exclusive interview with WPG Talk Radio 95.5
Vaccinated clients can choose whether or not to wear a face mask.
“Live from the Mohegan Sun Arena ‘will bring us back to normal,” Cantone said. “We’ve been doing this for a long time… but everything feels new… like we’re doing it for the first time,” Cantone said.
Cantone kept a stopwatch to know how much time had passed since a live act appeared.
“One year, two months and 29 days,” he says. “About 11,000 hours,” Cantone said.
“We’re back to normal,” Cantone said in his usual, positive tone.
“I’ve always thought that one of the big signifiers of the end of the COVID-19 virus would be the return of live entertainment.”
“We’ve come all the way back,” Cantone said.
Cantone also shared with us that Air Supply… Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell were “proud and honored to be the first act to appear publicly in the arena.”
In truth, the Mohegan Sun Arena never closed during the pandemic.
Through skillful negotiations and collaboration with several working partners, Mohegan Sun teamed up with Viacom and successfully aired a series of “Bubble Broadcasts” from the arena that brought up the Showtime Boxing and Bellator Mixed Martial events. Arts to over 12 million viewers and viewers all over the world. .
We have reported in detail here when this was happening in real time during the pandemic.
“We found a way to stay relevant during historical times,” Cantone said. “We could have just sat and waited, but we took the opportunity that comes with a crisis. We were able to keep a lot of people at work and keep the place alive and healthy.”
These efforts led to CelebrityAccess being named Cantone Innovator of the Year for 2020.
“This recognition is shared with great respect and empathy for all members of the Mohegan Sun team,” said Cantone. “In a time of uncharted territory and personal risk, they’ve found a way to show the world what we do best, even during a historic pandemic. “
Cantone also presented the ESPN live rewards program to an international television audience.
To date, the Mohegan Sun has more than three dozen concerts, sporting events and shows scheduled at the Arena through December. Among them, Brantley Gilbert, Blake Shelton, Harry Styles, Sebastian Maniscalco, the Dave Matthews Band and the Doobie Brothers with Michael McDonald (see program).
New events will continue to be announced, Cantone says, and the Sun is committed to hosting the Miss America pageant for the next three years. Justin Bieber, The Weeknd and Brad Paisley have also each confirmed for shows in 2022.
“I felt like an air traffic controller trying to land 500 planes at once,” Cantone says, laughing in relief now that this is actually happening. “We had reserved spaces all over the calendar, and a lot of major artists pushed their tour schedules back to 2022. It was just a huge mental challenge because it was uncharted territory with no way to plan for normalcy.
“At the same time, we were delighted that over time and progress, a lot of artists specifically wanted to come back to the Arena – so of course we got them in. The schedule for this summer is very respectable considering of what we were up against, then August and September we will resume, October is our 25th anniversary and I am happy to report that we have planned a spectacular month, ”Cantone concluded.
